Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i will play a major role in consolidating support for ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2022 polls, an MCA has said.
For over 18 months now, Dr Matiang'i has been working closely with Mr Odinga, a move that gives a hint of impending cooperation in 2022.
In August, Raila asked Gusii politicians to go slow on Matiang'i's bid, adding that when the right time comes, a proper message will be communicated.
"Matiang'i is my son. You don't have to tell me about what he wants. But let's go slow until that time comes. We can't fall to our opponents trap," he said.
For a decade, Mr Odinga has often won majority votes from Gusii despite the fact that other presidential aspirants also scoop some votes.
But Majority Leader Duke Masira says the partnership between Matiang'i and Raila would ensure that over 1 million Kisii people vote as a block.
This, he adds, will give Raila a strong advantage over Deputy President William Ruto, who is also keen to get some votes from Gusii region.
"I know that with constitutional changes, Matiang'i will have his stake in government. Now that he's bringing Gusii people together, this will be an added advantage to Raila and a blow to Ruto," he says.
Dr Ruto has since fallen out and the competition between the two has escalated in Gusii region. Their camps have often clashed in function.
