Political communication strategist Benjamin Wafula now says that the dalliance being witnessed between former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru could be part of an ongoing political game.
The two who repeatedly hit out at each other in the past, with Waiguru even moving to court to sue Raila for accusing her of participating in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, have been showing an image of good friends lately.
According to Wafula, this appears more like a political game, at a time when Waiguru is being seen as a formidable political player in the Mt Kenya, while Raila is on the other hand thought to be eyeing the presidency in the 2022 polls.
The sudden change of heart on Raila's side is, therefore, most likely a political game to woo her and possibly use her growing influence to encroach into the Mt Kenya region in 2022, he said in a article on the Standard on Saturday.
"Raila’s visit to Kiamugumo may be his way of reaching out to Waiguru and his support base as he seeks to form a formidable force to contest in the 2022 elections. As you know, the world of politics is one of infinite possibilities," he says.
According to Wafula, what remains to be seen what position she will be given in Raila's camp and if the dalliance will be approved by her supporters, a friendship that began after Raila's truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018.
"Should that be the case, it would be interesting to see which position Waiguru would be given in Raila’s tag team and whether her support base would endorse the idea," he adds.
