Speaking on Tuesday to members of the press, Mr McCater urged members of the political class to stop hijacking the initiative.

He said that there was a need for the debate on the BBI report to be held in the context of a peaceful environment.

"The net result of this has to be what the people want. The end result of this doesn't need to be the politicians hijacking the BBI" he said.

The US ambassador's passionate appeal comes just days after President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the BBI report to the public at the Bomas of Kenya.

Uhuru urged Kenyans to read the document for themselves with an open mind before making a decision on whether to back or oppose it.

The document was cobbled together out of the views that were collected from Kenyans from across the 47 counties.

Politicians have been trading strong words over how the BBI should be adopted.

A section of politicians wants the document to be taken to parliament for debate and subsequent adoption.

Another section wants the BBI subjected to a referendum so that Kenyans can directly decide its fate.

Among those calling for the BBI to be taken to the Kenyan people is its chief exponent, former prime minister Raila Odinga.
