Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has rubbished reports linking him to an alleged plot to assassinate DP William Ruto, terming them as 'wild allegations'.
A letter purportedly from a loyal Cabinet Secretary addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta, revealed that Macharia, his colleagues Peter Munya, Sicily Kariuki and Joe Mucheru are among leaders from Mt Kenya plotting to kill Ruto.
In an interview with the Nation on Wednesday, Macharia, who is in China for a trade conference, delinked his name from the said plot, calling for more investigations from DCI.
According to him, the meetings held at La Mada Hotel along Thika Road were purely development oriented. He said MPs from Mt Kenya have been making follow-ups on development, necessitating meetings with government officials.
“We met to discuss the development agenda in Mt Kenya region and not to plot how to eliminate the Deputy President. The claims are untrue. He is our boss. Why would we think of such an illegal move?” he posed.
“We serve with the Deputy President in one government and we have one leader who is President Uhuru Kenyatta. We only have one mandate as a government to serve Kenyans and that is the only business we have,’’ he said.
DCI boss George Kinoti on Tuesday said he's keen to investigate the origin of the letter, which does not bear letterhead as that of ministers. It's not clear whether or not President Uhuru Kenyatta received the said letter.
“We are treating that letter seriously and investigators want to ascertain its origin and authenticity. Once we know the source of the letter and how it came to existence, we shall focus on the authenticity of the issues raised,” said Kinoti.
“So far, we have no formal complaint,” said Kinoti. “But it is our work as police officers to investigate any crime about to be committed and which comes to our attention.”
