Joseph Irungu alias Jowie who is a key suspect in the murder of Monica Kimani was on Friday transferred from Kamiti Maximum Prison in Nairobi to Manyani Maximum Security Prison in Voi, Taita Taveta County.
Speaking on Monday, Jowie's mother, Anastacia, said that they were told that he was transferred on Friday late in the evening.
The manner in which her son was transferred has triggered fear in her. She now suspects her son is in danger.
"He has been taken to Manyani and his next appearance in court is in February. It's like they want to do something to him," she said.
"The prison officer says it's a normal transfer but our lawyer says he has never heard of something like that," added Anastacia.
However, what puzzled the family of Jowie is the fact that he is still in remand and has not been sentenced to serve in prison. She asked some of the prison wardens at Kamiti, who also said this shocked them.
Irungu's family, through their lawyer, Prof Hassan Nandwa, also noted that they had not asked for the transfer of Jowie from Kamiti.
Jowie's parents on Monday took a bus to Voi to confirm that their son was indeed transferred to the said prison and that nothing happened to him as they suspect something bad is being planned.
"We have to see if he is okay and if indeed he is there," said the mother. His case will be heard again in February.
