The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has planned demolitions to bring down the mushrooming developments around the Diani Airport, formerly known as the Ukunda Airstrip.

Security officials and experts at the authority are also contemplating demolishing commercial and residential developments around flight paths surrounding the facility.

According to Kwale County Commissioner Karuko Ngumo, this is in line with safety purposes, as the airport authority considers the buildings risky for aircrafts.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ngumo said that the authorities have since summoned all the involved stakeholders, with the exercise set to begin in the coming few weeks.

"We are on discussions, the negotiations have brought all the stakeholders on the table before we ponder next move," he told the Standard.

The police boss added that negotiations are in top gear with the developers to as well allow the owners bring the buildings down themselves.

In an earlier interview, the KAA confirmed that it has since written to the county government over the looming destructions of the developments.

This follows last week's arrest of a supervisor who was overseeing the construction of a building near a flight path which is on its fifth floor, contrary to the required two floors.

Alphonse Bonanzi was arrested immediately after a crisis meeting bringing together the Kwale Security team which had converged at the airstrip premises to discuss the growing risk.
