In an address to the nation on Thursday, the Canadian premier said that his administration had received intelligence that the International Ukraine Airlines flight 752 was hit.

“We have intelligence, including from our allies and own intelligence that the plane was shot down by Iranian surface-to-air missiles,” Trudeau said as quoted by the Guardian newspaper.

“Canadians want answers. That means transparency, accountability and justice," he added.

The claims now add another layer to the complexity of the crash saga.

Initial reports had indicated that that the plane might have encountered technical issues before coming down.

The intelligence that the plane was hit by a missile is a shocking turn of events.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson echoed what was said by his Canadian counterpart.

"There is now a body of information that the flight was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. This may well have been unintentional. We are working closely with Canada and our international partners and there now needs to be a full, transparent, " Boris Johnson said in a statement seen by the Guardian.

The two leaders have called for a thorough investigation, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported.
