At least 17 people were on Monday killed in a deadly explosion in Mogadishu hours after Army Commander Lieutenant General Walter Raria's trip.
Mogadishu is one of the towns heavily guarded by AMISOM troops including those selected from KDF and has been under consistent Al-Shabaab raids in recent months.
According to reports published by VOA journalist Harun Maruf, which were confirmed by Planning Minister Aw Hirsi, a suicidecar bomb exploded, killed the 17 at midday, EAT.
"Suspected car bomb blast in the area between the first security checkpoint of Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport near K-4 and Hotel Afrik. Explosion came just two days after security reports emerged warning of possible VBIED on the loose in Mogadishu," he said.
"At least 17 killed nearly 30 others injured in Mogadishu car bomb blast, per medical sources. The Al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility for the attack," be added.
On Saturday, General Walter Raria visited several Forward Operating Bases in Somalia, where he interacted with troops that have been executing peace mission in Somalia for years now.
In a statement, Raria urged KDF to continue executing their roles by defending Kenya's territorial integrity, which has been under threat from the Al-Shabaab militants for years.
"This was under his routine visits that the commander makes to monitor and motivate troops in the field. As the troops continue to defend the territorial integrity of the Republic of Kenya, such visits accord the commander an opportunity to interact and share experiences with the soldiers at their areas of operation," read a statement from KDF.
The explosion is the second after Kismayo's deadly attack last week which left 27 dead. The series of attacks are being launched amid maritime border crisis between Kenya and Somalia.
Kenya threatened recently to withdraw troops from Somalia after it emerged that Mogadishu had auctioned oil fields within disputed border at the Indian Ocean.
