Several vehicles were on Thursday involved in an accident at the Maai Mahui escarpment along the Maai Mahiu-Limuru road.
A huge crowd of onlookers milled at the scene of the accident while some people took advantage of the unfortunate incident to loot from the ill-fated vehicles.
The area residents made away with bales of flour and mattresses from vehicles that were involved in the accident as rescue operation continued.
Police who arrived at the scene had a hard time controlling the crowd and the situation was worsened by the heavy rainfall.
The accident occurred after a truck driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into eight cars that were on the road.
Confirming the incident, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said no one died during the accident but several people suffered serious injuries.
Waweru said preliminary investigations indicated that the trailer might have developed a mechanical fault while going downhill ramming onto several cars before crashing by the roadside.
“The accident involved at least ten vehicles and we glad that no lives were lost,” said the OCPD.
At least 18 people were injured and six who suffered serious injuries were rushed to various hospitals in the area.
Jennifer Njeri, a matatu passenger, said the accident happened so fast adding that their driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Maai Mahiu town.
“We knew something was wrong when we started hearing loud bangs but we were not able to get out of the matatu in time,” said Njeri who did not suffer any injuries during the accident.
