A 29-year-old woman and her four children are recuperating at a Kisumu hospital after sustaining serious knife wounds inflicted by the former.
Mercy Anyango reportedly locked herself and the children in their house in Awasi in Nyando constituency on Monday, and proceeded to stab them before turning the knife on herself.
In an interview with the Standard, she said she took the action after separating from her husband over numerous domestic disagreements.
She said even after securing a casual farm job in a nearby village, the husband kept stalking and threatening her, hence her decision to move to Awasi.
Anyango added that she decided to kill herself and the children after being unable to fend for her children, claiming that the husband has also been unwilling to help with their upkeep.
"I could not fend for my children, and my husband had also declined to support them. I needed to rest," she said.
George Oketch, the husband, admitted that the woman is her wife, but denied being behind her actions.
“This is an issue which we have been following through the Children's Department so that I could take my children, and she moves on with her life, but the matter has not been settled. I was surprised to receive a call that she attempted to kill herself and the children,” he said.
Dr Brian Amata, a medic at the facility, said the five suffered numerous injuries but are out of danger.
