Hoteliers at the coastal region have recorded a booming business this festive season, with hotels recording 100 percent bookings.
The same has been recorded by other tourism establishments, as tourists, both domestic and foreign, troop to the ocean-side region for the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The hoteliers have based the good business on good prices, aggressive marketing, and the introduction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which links the coast to Nairobi.
They on Thursday said that the increase in number of domestic tourists is large as a result of the flexible packages introduced to fit their budgets.
"We have introduced special packages for Kenyans to encourage them to enjoy affordable holiday retreats,” said Wafula Waswa, Travellers Beach Hotel Marketing Manager.
Areas of Mombasa, Watamu and Malindi have been the biggest beneficiaries of this year's end year festivities.
Waswa urged hotel and hospitality facilities to consider promoting domestic tourism, which has kept the hospitality sector afloat following the decline of international tourists.
“Domestic visitors have proved crucial and have the potential to sustain this fragile but lucrative industry," he added.
The same was the case at public recreational facilities like the Mama Ngina Waterfront, which received a huge number of visitors for the Christmas holiday on Wednesday.
