Legendary politician William Ole Ntimama remains one of the most popular politicians in the history of the nation, after years of service in both elective and appointed leadership.

For instance, he served as Member of Parliament for Narok North for 25 years, having joined politics in 1974, and also served in different ministerial positions through out.

But his tenure, just like that of other politicians, was not free from controversy, after he made a rather controversial remark against locals living in Narok.

During the ethnic clashes of 1990, the lawmaker caused a storm when he warned a community living in the region to "lay low like an envelope", a remark that looked more like an ethnic threat.

Years later, he claimed that he meant an " antelope" accusing the media of making up the envelope part, as he sought to dissociate himself with the remark.

"It was an antelope, but the press picked envelope and it became so popular. I didn’t want to interfere. It remains envelope in the books of history,” he said.

He would later cause another stir when he advised the Maasai community to ignore family planning and give birth to as many children as possible to raise the community's numbers.

He died in 2016.
