Laikipia University main campus has been closed indefinitely following students unrest.
In a notice issued by the university's Senate requiring students to vacate the premises with immediate effect, the office of the registrar stated that the students' engagement with the police and destruction of property within and outside the campus informed the decision to halt the ongoing academic programme.
"The 110th Laikipia University special senate meeting held on 26th March 2019 at 12:07pm resolved to close the main campus indefinitely with immediate effect following students unrest, engaging with the police and subsequent destruction of property within and without. Consequently, all students are directed to vacate the university premises latest by 1:00pm today Tuesday 26th March 2019," read the notice.
The students in a separate notice issued by the office of the Vice Chancellor have been given the go-ahead to picket peacefully following their letter requesting permission to hold peaceful demonstrations.
Laikipia University becomes the second university to be closed indefinitely following the closure of Kibabii University after unrest and subsequent destruction of property.
University students have been agitating for their rights after the cultural week editions which are a norm in the university calendar were scrapped this year.
