Deputy President (DP) William Ruto on Tuesday congratulated athletes; Benjamin Kigen and Lillian Kasait for giving Kenya its first gold medal in the men and women's races respectively.
In a tweet, DP Ruto hailed the two athletes for providing spectacular performances at the ongoing African games in Rabat, Morocco.
"Congratulations to Benjamin Kigen for winning gold in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and Lillian Kasait for clinching gold in the women’s 5,000m at the #AfricanGames in Rabat, Morocco. A strong, assertive performance," he said.
Kigen took 8 minutes and 12.39 seconds to become the men’s 3,000m steeplechase champion.
This was Kenya's first gold medal at the continental games.
In the same race, Olympic, World and Commonwealth champion Consenslus Kipruto failed to finish the race.
Lillian Kasait made it two golds for Kenya after winning the women’s 5,000m race.
She took 15 minutes and 33.63 seconds to win the race ahead of two Ethiopians.
Lydia Jeruto, another Kenyan in the race finished sixth in 15:43.56.
On Monday, Kenya secured seven medals, with two being gold, two silver, and three bronze.
