Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has dismissed the 2019 census report which indicates that the total population in the county is 605,576.
Addressing journalists in Nyamira Town on Tuesday, the county boss argued that there is no way the number of people in Nyamira grew by only 7,000 in the last 10 years.
"I do not agree with the figures released that the numbers of people in Nyamira rose by 7,000. Between 2009 and 2019, 94,000 children were born in Nyamira and were fully registered while we had approximately 15,000 unregistered children," said Nyagarama.
The ODM governor further argued that Nyamira had 5,000 immigrants between 2009 and 2019 while 17,000 people died between that period with 10,000 residing outside Nyamira.
"In Nyamira we expected the total population to be 685,000 people. Our population has been reduced and we can not accept it. The low population means Nyamira County will not get enough resources from the national government. The figures in the 2019 census report are not realistic and no one is going to accept it," he added.
Nyagarama noted that there will be no development in the county if enough resources won't be allocated to the county.
The preliminary census results were presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday.
