Kisumu Members of County Assembly now want to know what happens to disaster management funds which have always been set aside in every budget year.
According to the MCAs, the disaster management and prevention department have not been helpful even in the current ongoing heavy downpour which has already caused harm to their electorates.
Addressing the media at the Kisumu county assembly on Tuesday West Nyakach ward representative George Oluoch said none of the disaster management troupe has come to their aid since heavy rains and strong winds blew off roofs.
“Strong wind came blew off roofs and brought down some buildings that’s why I asked in the assembly about the readiness of the disaster management office in helping such situation. We have never received any help since that happened,” said Oluoch.
Oluoch who raised a question in the assembly demanding for explanations on what happens to funds always set aside for disaster also revealed that despite reporting the matter to the concerned department nothing has been done.
Manyatta B ward MCA Pamela Akinyi Odhiambo who also presented the same agenda to the assembly told the media that several roads and water channels are no longer helpful as floods overflow, getting to the houses belonging to the slum dwellers.
“My ward has been affected and that’s why I chose to table flood motion in the assembly,” said Akinyi.
According to her, Manyatta B is on the lower side so when it rains heavily the Manyatta people get affected, asking the county government of Kisumu to intervene.
“This has become a song; we want the County Government to give us money for disaster. The issue should be treated as an emergency and curb before causing extra harm,” she said.
Since the beginning of heavy downpour in the Kisumu, several places with poor drainages including estates in the lakeside city and flats lands such as Nyando and parts of Nyakach have suffered because of floods.
