Volker Bassen, a veteran Swedish scuba diver, has officially joined the recovery efforts currently underway at the Likoni Ferry Crossing.
Mr Bassen had said that he was capable of retrieving the bodies trapped in the Likoni Channel if given a chance to do so.
"This is nothing that we haven't experienced before in Kenya, by the end of the day we actually have the world record when it comes to altitude diving and recovering bodies. Not many people know this because it is nothing that we talk about, " he said.
The development will inject some hope into the recovery operations that are on their third day today.
Mariam Kighendi and her daughter Amanda Mutheu sunk in the Indian Ocean while trapped in their car on Sunday evening.
A video, widely shared online, shows the moments before the car they were in went under, killing hopes of finding them alive.
Mr Bassen has been involved in a string of successful recovery operations and has trained professional scuba divers.
Speaking on Thursday on the Kenya Television Network, the Swedish diver who is married to a Kenyan woman, said that the operation to recover the bodies was a delicate one and would require specialised equipment to pull it off.
