In his speech, Mr Obama hailed Cummings as a leader who was a living example of kindness and integrity, calling on Americans to follow the example of the legislator.

"There’s nothing weak about looking out for others. There’s nothing weak about being honorable. You’re not a sucker to have integrity and to treat others with respect, " Obama said.

Obama went on to add that Elijah Cummings was a honourable man long before he ventured into politics.

"We’re supposed to introduce them as honorable. But Elijah Cummings was honorable before he was elected to office. There’s a difference. There’s a difference if you were honorable and treated others honorably outside the limelight, " the former US president said.

There are those who interpreted the eulogy that was delivered by the former president as a rebuke to his successor President Donald Trump, who faces an impeachment inquiry.

Though he never mentioned Trump by name, Obama appeared to compare his successor and the late Congressman.

Elijah Cummings was part of the impeachment inquiry committee that is in the process of listening to testimony that may lead to the current US president being removed from office.
