Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka is among renowned lawyers who have applied to be elevated to the Senior Counsel level.
According to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the list of 60 people also includes former Justice Minister Martha Karua and the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji.
Others are Charles Kanjama, Ben Sihanya, former Mombasa Mayor Taib Ali Taib, chairman of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal Chair Kyalo Mbombu and Dr Imaana Laibuta.
It has been five years since a similar promotion was effected after its introduction in 2003.
The applicants are set to be vetted by a committee made up of Attorney General, a High Court judge and another one from the Court of Appeal, three Senior Counsel members and four advocates.
To be allowed into the higher level, one must have practised law for 15 years, with the other qualification being a contribution to the legal profession.
Some of the Senior Counsels in Kenya include James Orengo, Nzamba Kitonga, Ahmednassir Abdullahi, former Attorney General Githu Muigai and Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo.
Others are Environment CS and former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, Pheroze Nerwojee, Tom Ojienda and Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni.
