Speaking in Kapseret on Wednesday while marking the World Food Day, Chemno said diversification is the only way for the county and country to be food secure.

“As County government, we are very serious with diversification and so far we have distributed more than 500,000 seedlings of high values crops such as macadamia, avocado, and tea,” he said.

The deputy county boss reiterated that with diversification, farmers get money as well as get food to feed their children.

He also noted that food security plays a critical role in the growth of Kenya's economy besides creating a healthy society.

“The County is utilizing extension officers who will educate the farmers on diversification, helping them cultivate these crops which keep hunger at bay," Chemno said.

On his part, County Executive in charge of Agriculture, Samuel Yego called on farmers to venture into short term crops that will help them get money and be food secure.

Yego also asked the farmers to utilize the County machinery and agricultural equipment that is available at the ward levels for them to adopt modern farming methods and systems.
