After his historic tour of Luo Nyanza late last year, attention is on President Uhuru Kenyatta as the nation watches to see what he will do for the region this year.
Its worth noting that the trip was one of a kind, considering that the region has spent most of its years in the opposition, leading to it being largely ignored by President Kenyatta's predecessors.
Therefore, the nation will be watching to see whether he was sincere in his promise to involve the region in his leadership, or was just impressing area kingpin and opposition leader Raila Odinga after their truce early that year.
To prove that he was sincere, President Kenyatta should:
1. Head back to the region and tour the two counties he skipped in December, this being Homa Bay and Migori.
Failure to this, it will appear like he carefully settled on the two for personal reasons, and only visited Kisumu to calm down Nyanza, since it doubles up as the heart of the region and has always led the way in rejecting his leadership.
Siaya on the other hand, is the bedrock of Raila, which had to be a visited to appease the former Prime Minister and prevent further opposition.
To prove that he indeed means well for the former province, it will be important that he launches projects in the two counties as he did in Siaya and Kisumu.
2. As the Head of State and symbol of national unity, he could also take the opportunity to reconcile area leaders said to be harboring enmity among themselves.
These include Migori Governor Okoth Obado and the rest of the ODM brigade, considering that the governor is considered a rebel and a troublesome man.
Others are Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti and his rival and former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga.
