Police Officers in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, are investigating an incident where a man is suspected of committing suicide after reportedly killing his wife.
The Saturday incident happened in Ober village after 21-year-old Paul Ochieng is said to have clobbered his wife Beryl Atieno, 18, after an argument.
According to the area chief Mark Ongoro, the man was angered by his mother in law's alleged interference in their marriage, after she attempted to convince the wife to complete her education.
The administrator added that Beryl was a form two student at a school in a neighbouring county.
“The woman was a Form Two student at a school in Migori County. Her mother wanted her to complete her education which apparently angered her husband,” he was quoted by the Standard.
He added that the man was later seen at the nearby Pala trading centre where he is alleged to have bought a rope to hang himself before going home to kill his wife.
"He went back to his house and killed his wife on the spot. He used a piece of wood from one of his tables to hit Ms Atieno on the head,” the chief reported.
The man was later found hanging from the roof and was rushed to the hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
He is said to have poisoned himself.
Bodies of both were moved to the Homa Bay Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation, pending burial.
