This comes only weeks after the government embarked on a campaign to both eradicate the troublesome hyacinth and at the same time dredge the lake to accommodate big ships.

According to Jan Su Chun, Managing Director of Mango Tree, the firm entrusted with the job, the project will enable the town to become a regional economic hub.

''We are likely to witness increased maritime investments and activities around the lake that will create more work and jobs for locals,'' Chun said on Wednesday.

He spoke when the Lake Region Economic Block offices in Kisumu to update the officials on the ongoing preparations to begin dredging the lake.

The port will be able to hold about 40, 000 containers at a go upon completion, in what Chun observed will as well tackle the rising unemployment rates around the region by providing job openings.

'We are expecting to ship gantry cranes parts in about 40 containers and assemble them here to start work,'' he added.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga were recently on the ground to supervise the job after the burial of former Youth Fund Chair Bruce Odhiambo in Muhoroni.
