Kenyan university students may once again be a frustrated lot after lecturers' announcement that they will officially commence their strike from January 20, 2020.
Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) Secretary-General Constantine Wesonga said their move was triggered by the government after it failed to comply with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which was signed in October 2019.
The move is likely to cripple learning in 35 public universities, as lecturers seek to be paid Sh13.8 billion exclusive of pension.
However, the lecturers had already pledged to take the offered Sh8.8 billion to avoid the looming crisis.
"Seemingly, the money could have been diverted elsewhere, leaving us here with double speech treatment from SRC and Education Ministry," Mr. Wesonga said in a press conference in Nairobi.
According to Dr. Wesonga, despite their demand for the Sh13.8 billion, they are still willing to accept the Sh8.8 billion, owing to the hard economic times in the country.
