Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i on Wednesday led a host of Gusii professionals at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi for fundraiser towards Gusii doctors.
Doctors from Kisii and Nyamira are expected to start medical camps across the region this month, with an aim of helping residents get quality healthcare.
Speaking at the event, Dr Matiang'i lauded the doctors' initiative, saying it will supplement existing government health programmes under the ministry of health.
"As professionals, we have a duty to help out people. I support your decision to hold medical camp. This will supplement government's efforts in fighting diseases," he said.
Health Principal Secretary Dr Susan Mocheche, who also comes from Gusii, said the ministry of health will work closely with the volunteering medics in their quest to improve healthcare.
"Collectivism is what the ministry will always support. I am happy to see the team working together. As government, I came to assure you our unwavering support."
Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi said the proposed medical camp will be important for women and elderly people.
"As leaders, we will support the medical camp. This is a huge relief for women and elderly people. Our healthcare may be struggling but we are on the right track."
Dr Matiang'i, who was the chief guest, said he will work closely with Inka Medical group in future. He also promised to work with Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae to improve existing health facilities.
