Within a week, there have been two different cases of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) blowing up prematurely at the Coast.
It is believed the IEDs were being planted by suspected Al-Shabab militants when they blew up earlier than planned.
The latest incidence happened on Thursday in Lamu County where four Al-Shabaab militants died. The explosives killed three militants on the spot while the fourth one died due to injuries while trying to escape from the crime scene.
Nation reported that the militants were planting the said explosives near Kwa Omollo Bridge along Bodhai-Bar’goni road before it blew off during the process.
In another incident, two men in Likoni Constituency, Mombasa County, were injured on Sunday after an explosive they working on went off.
A report by the Standard indicated that the two were injured after a liquid-based improvised explosive device they were assembling in the kitchen accidentally went off at around 10 pm. One of the men was arrested while the other escaped, however, his parents were arrested.
Police sources revealed that the two men had already been jailed after they were arrested back in 2014 at Musa Mosque in Mombasa. They were all linked to terrorism.
"We have received reports one of them was jailed for three years and another four years and we are investigating that," said Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich as quoted by the Standard.
The suspects were arraigned in court on Tuesday where the court ordered that they be detained for further investigations.
