Over 50 families from Kamukunji estate in the outskirts of Eldoret town were on Thursday displaced after the Uasin Gishu county government demolished their houses claiming they were built on sewer lines.
Addressing the media, the affected families claimed the county government demolished their houses without prior notice.
“On Wednesday we found out that our houses were marked for demolition without giving us any notice to vacate, it is sad that today they have demolished our houses,” said Nelson Omukoko one of the affected persons.
Omukoko claimed he lost property worth over Sh50,000 following the demolition.
The affected families said they have nowhere to go and urged the county government to help them find alternative premises.
“As I am talking, I have a three-month old baby and I have been evicted from my house. Where will I sleep surely ? With this rainy weather I have nowhere to go. I am not happy at all,” said Caroline Bett.
Efforts to reach Uasin Gishu Lands Executive Mr Maritim proved futile.
