ODM leader Raila Odinga has weighed in on the current corruption in the country, after yet another scam that has rocked the sports ministry.
Odinga, who spoke during the ‘moving beyond the handshake conference’, which was also attended by president Uhuru Kenyatta, said the country has sunk further into corruption and will need immediate measures to help steady the ship.
“We are the most corrupt country on the continent, we are now fighting the super league of corruption with countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nicaragua, some of the most corrupt countries,” he said.
“The police are some of the most corrupt, every year when Transparency International give their report, the police are ranked up there,” he added.
According to latest investigations by the auditor general, Sh1.7 billion is said to have been lost through single-sourcing, undelivered supplies and lack of documentation.
Sh138 million worth of bills was still pending and yet to be paid, a year after the championships were held.
The Auditor General questioned how Sh 349 million was lost through direct procurement, without meeting the required conditions of the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.
Out of this amount, Sh 60 million was used for the procurement of taxi services from Pewin cabs, which was Sh23 million above the market rate.
Following this revelation, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has summoned Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia to explain the loss.
