And while it might be confused as his own style, which was the case with his jackets, Kenyatta had no other option when it came to the leather scandals, and most likely did not enjoy it as well.

The reason why he did not wear closed shoes during his old days was as a result of his eczema, a skin disease which makes skin red and itchy and whose cure remains at large.

In her memoirs "Miss Uhuru 1963: Working for Mzee Jomo Kenyatta", Kenyatta's then Social Secretary Elizabeth Madoka terms the inflammatory disease as the reason that condemned Mzee to leather sandals.

But this was not the only disease Mzee was suffering from, but also suffered from gout, which saw his doctor Erick Mgola ban him from eating roast meat, which he loved so much.

Attempts to discourage him from the meat were met by; “I have never seen a lion with gout," response from Kenyatta.

Mgola would respond with; "You are Head of State, eat what you want," as Mzee Jomo Kenyatta proceeded to enjoy his dish.

Dr Njoroge Mungai, a doctor and close cabinet minister to Kenyatta was on the other hand blaming Dr Mgola for "slowly killing the old man."
