Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has hit out at President Uhuru Kenyatta over his government's appetite for Chinese loans.
Khalwale accused the president of failing to involve Parliament in his pursuit of foreign loans.
Speaking on Citizen TV's Day Break on Thursday, Khalwale asked president Kenyatta to follow the right procedures when negotiating for foreign loans.
"There is nothing wrong with borrowing. Just about any working economy borrows. However, why is it a challenge in making a full disclosure on the contracts in the Kenyan scenario? Why not allow local companies to be the ones implementing the projects?
"If the borrowing is noble, why did the president not disclose to Parliament during the State of the Nation address the commitments his government is in? I do not know. Maybe they were going to 'cut deals' in China" the former Senator posed during the interview.
He also questioned the government preparedness on how to handle and repay the loans.
Khalwale warned that borrowed money could easily be hijacked by corrupt state officials, and subject Kenyans to the misery of repaying valueless debts.
At the same show, government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe defended Kenya's borrowing record noting that, the government needs to borrow in order to implement development projects.
The government spokesperson said appropriate measures have been put in place to secure the loans from looters.
President Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga are currently in China to source for a Sh368 billion funding for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
If secured, the loan will help in extension of the SGR from Naivasha to Kisumu.
