Supreme Court President and head of Judiciary David Maraga says his love for bottle had completely dismantled his illustrious legal career for two decades.
Despite his habitual drinking, Chief Justice David Maraga had been baptized at a local SDA Church in Bonyamatuta. He continued with the behavior for a record 20 years.
At Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology on Saturday, Maraga confessed that has addiction had escalated to a point of taking alcohol on credit.
“I was baptised on October 30, 1965 when I was still in primary school but I got into bad company in high school. I started drinking even on credit,” Maraga said when he spoke at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
After completing his law degree, Maraga moved from his Nyamira ancestral home to Nakuru, where he practised for the better part of his life.
In 2003, he was appointed to the Judiciary as High Court Judge. Nine years later, he joined Appeals Court before his appointment as Chief Justice, five years.
The church elder, who is set to retire in 2021, recalled that he did his masters degree 34 years after his graduation from the University of Nairobi.
“I went back for masters’ 34 years later after my undergraduate. I would not have been Chief Justice if I had not given my life to Jesus Christ,” he said.
