Police officers in Mombasa are probing an incident in which an unidentified man on Sunday died after he jumped off MV Harambee ferry.
Those who were aboard the ferry were shocked to see him jump midstream the 500-metre the Likoni Ferry channel.
According to Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), the incident occurred at around 1.30 a.m. when the ferry was heading to the Island from the Mombasa mainland. KFS management believes that the man was insane as police continue with the investigations into the matter.
"The man was dressed in a white top and a black trouser. He left his seat, dashed to the aft prow and dove into the water," KFS said, as quoted.
The efforts of the KFS rescue team to recover the body of the deceased are yet to bear fruits. The officers have attributed their fruitless efforts to darkness and tidal effects to the delay in the search of the man.
Local divers and maritime officers are on the ground in the search of the deceased’s body. The family or friends of the deceased have not surfaced to make any claim after the incident.
The occurrence comes barely two weeks after divers recovered the bodies of Ms Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu from their car after it slid into the ocean under the unclear circumstance.
The government sacked the entire KFS board following the incident.
