Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has lent his voice to the ongoing debate on the need to introduce another tier of government that will see counties merged into regional structures.
Speaking on Sunday from Mombasa in an exclusive interview with NTV, Mr Malala held the view that regional governments would go against the idea that formed the basis of devolution.
According to the Amani National Congress (ANC) lawmaker, the idea of ensuring that small communities have representation would be greatly undermined by the re-introduction of another tier of government.
"And one of the objects of devolution was to enhance self--governance to communities; to protect minority communities. If we go back to the defunct provincial system, I think we shall not be working in the spirit of the objects of devolution, " the Kakamega senator said.
The outspoken legislator slammed governors pushing for regional governments, saying that they were being driven by selfish interests rather than national interest.
Those opposed to regional structures have argued that they will saddle the taxpayers with an even greater burden of funding them.
Proponents say that they will go a long way in strengthening devolution.
The 2010 constitution abolished the regional governments and introduced devolved units in the form of 47 counties.
