Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja now says that they will summon Governor Mike Sonko to explain why the county government has allegedly neglected Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
Sakaja says that Pumwani is in a sorry state and the county government must explain.
Speaking when he visited the maternity hospital on Wednesday after news of discovery of 11 bodies of infants, Sakaja wondered why there is no cold room or working incinerator at the city maternity hospital to preserve dead infants.
Sakaja further wondered why Sonko’s administration has set aside a hefty budget for health yet services in city hospitals are wanting.
“We are going to invite him to respond to the questions surrounding Pumwani hospital before we form an inquiry into the infant deaths,” he said.
Sakaja said that Sonko and health officials at the county and Pumwani management will be grilled by the inquiry.
The vocal Nairobi senator said that the Senate will take the issue seriously.
“We are going to follow up on this matter and ensure that action is taken on people who are 'sleeping' on their jobs,” he stated.
On Monday, eleven bodies of infants were discovered allegedly stuffed in boxes and nylon bags at Pumwani hospital.
Governor Sonko made the discovery and immediately suspended three top hospital managers.
However, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has hit out at Sonko accusing him of intimidating professional doctors.
The union has threatened to call for a doctors' strike in Nairobi if Sonko does not reinstate the suspended officials.
