Gor Mahia has been slapped with a suspension barring them from participating in the Cecafa Kagame Cup for two years.
The decision was made after the Kenyan football club failed to appear during the closing ceremony of the tournament on Friday night in Dar es Salaam.
Gor Mahia finished third in the regional football competition and were due to pocket Sh1 million.
Defending their title was Tanzania’s Azam FC who successfully who beat their closest rivals Simba 2-1.
According to the tournament rules, the top three teams, Simba, Azam and Gor Mahia were supposed to grace the podium to receive their winners' medals and cheques, a ceremony that Gor Mahia snubbed.
A Cecafa official disclosed that they had asked Gor Mahia for their bank details but waited in vain. The players had demanded that they get paid the Sh1million in cash.
“We met Gor Mahia on Thursday and asked them to give us their bank account details, we waited in vain while Simba, Azam and even JKU gave us theirs because they knew they are in the money bracket. We were to release the money by Saturday noon to their respective bank accounts,” explained the Cecafa official.
