Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Collymore is dead. Collymore died at his home early Monday after battling cancer for a long time.
Collymore's death was confirmed by Safaricom Board Chairman Nicholas Nganga.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore CEO of SAFARICOM PLC, which occured at his home on the morning of 1st July 2019," reads a statement by Safaricom Chairperson Nicholas Nganga.
Unfortunately for many, there were several incomplete projects that he was involved in, with the latest one being in collaboration with the ONE global movement and female rapper Black Queen SN, to end sexual violence in Senegal.
"I’ve signed @BlackQueenSN and @ONECampaign’s petition to demand the criminalisation of rape in Senegal. Together, we can put an end to gender-based violence," read Bob's last tweet on Saturday 29 June.
Senegal has been suffering from increased cases of sexual violence in learning institutions and the general society, with the Human Rights Watch reporting that even teachers are involved in this inhumane act.
Following Collymore's death, Kenyans of goodwill have sent condolence messages to his family and friends.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned Collymore terming him 'a distinguished corporate leader'.
"It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we've lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed," he said.
