The debate was reignited by former Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe, and Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, who argue that Uhuru is too young to head to retirement in 2022.

They propose he should occupy the Prime Minister position, which will be created through implementation of recommendations of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

However, the calls have been opposed by some leaders such as former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, and Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, who argue Uhuru should go home in 2022 as per the requirements of the constitution.

Khalwale termed proponents of the idea as 'jokers', pointing out that retired President Daniel Arap Moi and his successor Mwai Kibaki obeyed the supreme law and retired honorably.

"Jokers! Presidents Moi and Kibaki left office not because of age, but that so said the constitution. Going into 2020 we must never feather the nests of jokers who claim that President Uhuru is too young to retire," the former legislator tweeted on Tuesday.

On his part, Ledama termed the debate as annoying, noting there are other more important and urgent issues which need to be addressed.

"This debate of too young to retire is really annoying. When are we going to respect the rule of law? Nonsense! We need jobs in Kenya, we need to end tribalism in Kenya, we need to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor. We need a cabinet that’s the face of Kenya not a tribe!" the Senator posted.

Uhuru is on record saying he does not want to continue being in power after 2022 polls.
