The bill which seeks to reduce the number of MPs, scrap the position of deputy governor and introduce a one-term presidency of seven years in the country hit a dead end after Kiambu MCAs unanimously failed to support it.

While speaking to the Daily Nation, a section of leaders of the county assembly revealed why they rejected the bill.

"The bill if it succeeds will lead to the county’s improper representation at the national. We, therefore, cannot support it due to those reasons among others,” Said   Yvonne Wanjiku, who is also the chairperson on the assembly’s committee on Implementation and Law Affairs as quoted by the Daily Nation

On his part, the assembly’s majority leader Gideon Gachara said that the bill will not favour regions with high population. “The bill totally disregards populous regions. There is no equality as far as the bill is concerned. There is no way populous counties like Kiambu, Nairobi among others can be equated with the less populous ones, " Mr Gachara said.

A report prepared by the committee also indicated that the bill was rejected because it will not provide equity and equality and the less vulnerable in the societies will not benefit.

“Women, youth, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities and marginalized communities would not get the representation they need. This would reverse gains made in achieving equality and equity in the political sphere as articulated in the constitution,” reads part of the report.
