In a tweet on Sunday, ACA said that its officials descended on the plant and arrested 3 individuals including the owner.

The 3 who are in police custody will be arraigned in a court of law on Monday to face what the agency has described as compounded charges of running a business without a proper licence, endangering public health and counterfeiting.

Conditions in which the plant was operating are said to be unhygienic hence endangering public health.

To appear as a genuine brand, ACA said that the plant was using the bottles of established water brands in the country.

"ILLEGAL WATER REFILLING PLANT SHUT DOWN. @ACAKenya insp. shut down an illegal drinking water bottling plant in Embakasi, Nairobi. Three people including the owner arrested and to be arraigned in court on Monday," ACA said in its tweet.

"The non-descript plant was operating without a licence in a makeshift structure in a residential area (unhygienic environment). Suspects are being processed for compounded charges of counterfeiting, operating without licence and in unhygienic conditions, " the agency added.

Water bottling is a lucrative business, making it attractive to crooks.
