Officer Daniel Gallagher is recovering after being stabbed while helping detain a suspect.

Eyewitnesses saw a 45-year-old man Stephen Deatelhauser of Souderton who was being chased by an officer after he allegedly caused disturbance by showing off a knife and another unnamed weapon.

The suspect had also pulled a fire alarm at multiple businesses, which triggered action from police. Deatelhauser was later wrestled down near a certain parking lot.

Daniel Gallagher who was off-duty, was nearby the parking lot to witness the action as fellow officers tried to arrest the suspect.

The 36-year-old Gallagher swing into action, and while in the process of helping, he was stabbed on his shoulder.

Bucks County District Attorney Matthew D. Weintraub while addressing the press, said he was proud of the officer who decided to help when there was need, even when he was not on duty nor with work tools, including protective bullet proof vest.

He said the action revealed the officers in the town are always on duty all the time including when they are not on duty.

“He was off duty today but when he saw the call to act, he didn’t stop to put on his uniform, he didn’t check to see if he had his bulletproof vest, he didn’t check to see if he had his service weapon, he didn’t stop for any of those things. His first instincts were not for his own safety or protection, but for that of his fellow officers and for members of the public,” said Bucks County District Attorney Matthew D. Weintraub in a Facebook video shared by CBS Philly.

The DA also said the suspect will be judged immediately.
