Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui is on the spot after up to 50 families were left homeless in Elburgon, Molo constituency on Tuesday evening.
The families’ homes were razed down by a fire outbreak.
Residents turned to the Nakuru county government accusing it of laxity in securing a fire engine for the sub-county.
“We have been singing about a fire engine for so long. Molo was forgotten the moment Lee won. Count the many fires we have had here,” Kimani Muchune, a resident, said.
Residents said that there is always a poor response by firefighters as they depend on a private fire engine from a local company.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika also hit out at the county administration.
She accused the county government of ‘neglecting its people’.
“It is disappointing that we keep hearing promises by the County Government to acquire fire engines to deal with this menace every time it happens. What will it take for the County Government to make this a priority and therefore save lives and property,” Kihika said.
The senator, who has been a harsh critic of Governor Kinyanjui, faulted a move by the county to buy courtesy buses.
“We can't forget how fast the Nakuru county government moved to acquire courtesy buses that were not a priority but couldn’t seem bothered to get the fire engines. How many deaths and destruction of property will it take for them to get their priorities right?” she said.
