Afghanistan's presidential election has kicked off with many of its citizens envisioning an election charred with violence and fraud.

The presence of heavy security was recorded in thousands of polling stations. However, threats from insurgents have also been noted making the security to be beefed up a step further.

Taliban militants who have vowed to target polling stations are yet to be tackled by Afghan forces deployed across the country.

Ashraf Ghani, the Afghan president cast his vote at a secured school named Kabul nearby his presidential palace. 

Talking to the media, the Afghan president said: “We are waiting for the decision of the people as to whether they will give us the authority... to bring peace on the basis of the Afghan people’s demand.”

The vote which has failed to fruition for two times comes at a time when Taliban - US talks failed to take root.

The two main candidates, who have shared power for years include the current President Ashraf Ghani, and chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah.

The presidential vote is expected to bring peace talks forth amid sparks of violence. The conflict in Afghanistan is resting at a bloody stalemate.

Reports state that an explosion near a polling station in the southern city of Kandahar occurred shortly after voting began. 

The Taliban group has reportedly dubbed the polls as illegitimate elections. Ever since the campaign began in Afghan, at least 55 lives have been claimed in Taliban attacks.

According to BBC, approximately 74 men, women and children died in Afghanistan conflicts which largely took place across the month of August.
