A section of Uasin Gishu farmers wants the Ministry of Agriculture to open the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) for them to deliver their maize.
They said despite the government promising to open the NCPB by December, there are no signs for opening it.
“We were expecting the cereal board to be opened December 1st but up to now, it hasn’t been. As farmers we are very angry since we have nowhere to take our produce,” said the Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association director Kipkorir Menjo.
The farmers lamented that they are now being exploited by cartels who are buying maize at a throw-away price not putting into consideration the cost of production.
They spoke after holding a consultative meeting between a representative of farmers from Uasin Gishu County and the National Cereals and Produce Board officials on Friday at the Eldoret NCPB depot.
“We are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to ensure that NCPB doors are opened with immediate effect for farmers to deliver their produce failure to which he must resign for failing in his mandate,” noted Thomas Bowen, a farmer.
Moiben MP Silas Tiren who also attended the meeting wondered why when it reaches a time for the government to buy maize, they don’t have money.
He claimed that CS Kiujuri was sleeping on the job as he is quiet while farmers are being exploited.
