Iodine is a very essential mineral in the human body as it helps in growth, reduces the damage of cells and boosts one's metabolism.
Iodine deficiency makes the body weak thus reducing one's productivity as well as causing discomfort.
Here are signs and symptoms of iodine deficiency:
1. Hair loss
Iodine deficiency results to low thyroid hormones which controls the growth of hair follicles. Therefore, reduced thyroid hormones leads to reduced growth of hair follicles which with time causes hair loss.
2. Fatigue and weakness
The thyroid gland plays a great role in producing the hormones that help the body in making more energy. When the iodine is low, the body is unable to produce the hormones thus deriving the body the energy it requires. This leaves one feeling weak.
3. Dry skin
Reduced iodine levels in the body reduces the ability of thyroid glands to produce thyroid hormones which are crucial for cell regeneration. This contributes to dry and flaky skin.
4. Swelling in the neck
This is one of the common signs of iodine deficiency. This occurs when the thyroid gland cannot make enough thyroid hormones and it works harder to produce them. This, in turn, makes the cells grow and multiply making the gland grow bigger.
5. Feeling colder than usual
Iodine deficiency results in reduced thyroid hormones which in turn reduce metabolism. A slower metabolism generates less heat making you feel colder than usual.
