Mixed in appropriate proportions, greed and desperation make a perfect concoction for conmen and women to lure their victims to part with whatever little they have. Even a mulika mwizi phone.
All a conman or woman has to do is promise a job, as Alice learnt, with incredible perks such as an attractive salary, free lunch, and maybe accommodation. These are the stuff that obliterates reason in among jobless youths.
Through a cousin of hers, Alice got called for a job position that a certain woman was offering. She had hovered around the cousin long enough to know her name and a few details about her life that she would use as leverage to her con game.
Alice borrowed money and travelled to Eldoret town for an appointment with the woman. She meets her at her cousin’s workplace, along Iten Road. She tells her to be careful, of course not in the presence of the woman but through a text message when she left with the woman.
The woman told her about what she was going to do: operate a boutique. She would get Sh15,000 every month and lunch would be provided. She worked on Alice’s trust, telling her that she had even gotten a job for her husband, who now worked with World Vision. She earned her trust and she moved in for the kill. Alice was lucky she didn’t have any money with her.
“She told me to help her with my phone since hers had gone off. She claimed that she wanted to withdraw money from the bank,” Alice says.
“She also asked for my purse, since she hadn’t carried any so that she could put the money in,” she added.
The con lady entered the bank and told her to wait outside for a couple of minutes. After waiting for close to two hours, she grew impatient and decided to investigate. The lady was nowhere to be seen. She had vanished with her phone.
However, her mind refused to accept that all the lady had said was not true. She had told Alice that she had also gotten a job for someone she knew. She waited a little more then decided to go and call her phone from a friend of hers who worked in town.
The phone was off, and that’s when it finally dawned on her that she had been conned. Luckily for her, had hurriedly left and forgotten many things, coupled with the fact that she didn’t have any money.
