Deputy President Dr William Ruto has joined leaders across the African continent in mourning former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

Kenya's deputy president described Mr Mugabe as a liberation hero, freedom fighter while hailing the former president's role in the liberation struggle of his country.

"Condolences to the people of Zimbabwe following the passing on of former President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe was a revolutionary freedom fighter and a liberation hero. He fought for the emancipation of his people and Zimbabwe's independence with courage, resolve and dedication," his tweet read.

Robert Mugabe died on Friday at 95.

His stint as the president of Zimbabwe was a checkered one with some seeing him as a liberation hero while others seeing him as a brutal dictator.

Mugabe's land reform policies are widely blamed for the country's economic collapse and were widely condemned by the international community.

He resigned dramatically after the military seized power, paving the way for former vice president Emerson Mnangagwa to become the president.

Zimbabweans who lived under his rule remain conflicted about his true legacy.

Opposition supporters contend that his grip on power led to a crackdown on dissent and the constriction of the democratic space.

President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogised Mr Mugabe as an elder statesman.
