The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has allayed fears of a looming disaster after cracks developed on the Njoro interchange along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
KeNHA in a statement assured motorists using the busy highway that it’s safe for them to use the Njoro interchange.
The agency said the visible crack on the bridge which is located outside Nakuru town was but a normal joint which was included in the design.
“Our attention has been drawn to Njoro Interchange and public speculation that there is a crack occasioned by the ongoing heavy rains. We wish to clarify that this is an expansion joint on the interchange, as there are with many other structures,” said KeNHA's Corporate Communication Assistant Director Clara Ouko in the statement as quoted by Standard.
Ouko said they are closely monitoring that section of the road and will update motorists who are using the interchange if there is any danger.
Motorists using the interchange had asked KeNHA to establish the cause of the crack to avert a disaster while some claimed that it was caused by the ongoing heavy rainfall in the area.
“The gap developed last week at a time it has been raining heavily. We fear that it might detach and collapse on vehicles under the interchange. KeNHA should move with speed and inspect the bridge,” said Patrick Njoroge, a matatu driver.
