The National Assembly has been pushing for the phasing out of the Senate, accusing it of among others, duplicating roles and overstepping its mandate.

Through Leaders of Majority Aden Duale and Minority John Mbadi, the National Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to have Ouko audit the monies incurred by the offices of the Majority and Minority leaders in the Senate.

Duale said that the Senate has since proceeded to create unconstitutional offices, which will be looked into to ascertain their legality.

“We are writing to the Auditor-General and Attorney-General why PSC has created offices in the Senate outside the constitution that have continuously been funded by the taxpayer," stated Duale.

He said that if found to have spent taxpayers monies illegally, MPs will fundraise for the Senators to have them refund the monies.

He said that some of the offices in question can only exist in the National Assembly.

"They have started the war and the war must go to the logical conclusion. If it is determined that they spent the monies illegally, we shall fundraise for them to ensure they pay back the monies,” he added.

In response, the Senate has threatened to seek legal redress to 20 legislative pieces passed by the lower house without its involvement.
