A section of Rift Valley politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto has once again fired shots at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over claims of bias.
Led by Senate Majority Leader and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, the group on Friday again accused the DCI of being misused by higher institutions.
Speaking during a fundraiser in Belgut, Kericho county, the group launched a push to have the DCI made an independent institution and detached from the National Police Service.
Murkomen said that the move might help in making the holder of the office independent from political interference, adding that the next holder should be picked through a vigorous exercise to lock out political godfathers.
"We want the office of the DCI to be made independent so that the officeholder cannot be arm-twisted by politicians,” he was quoted by the Nation.
“The next DCI should be picked through a competitive process as opposed to one who owes allegiance to political godfathers out to settle scores with others," added the lawmaker.
Politicians allied to Ruto have alleged over-concentration on Deputy President William Ruto with regards to the ongoing probes on several corruption scandals.
The plan, they say, is to portray him (Ruto) corrupt, with an aim of locking him out of the presidency in the 2022 general elections.
