Raphael Holinshed wrote in his book dubbed "the Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland" back  in 1577 that drinking a glass of whiskey keeps the doctor away

"Being moderately taken, it slows the age, cuts phlegm, helps digestion, cures dropsy, it heals the strangulation, keeps and preserves the head from whirling, the tongue from lisping, the stomach from wobbling, the guts from rumbling, the hands from shivering, the bones from aching…and truly it is a sovereign liquor if it is orderly taken,” Holinshed notes in the book.

Here are conditions cured by drinking whiskey;

1. Control of diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease whereby a person has high blood sugar due to an inability to produce sufficient quantities of the hormone insulin that are required to regulate blood-sugar level in the body.

This alcoholic drink contains ellagic acid that can control the level of blood-sugar in your bloodstream. It keeps the liver in check by ensuring that insulin hormones regulate excess sugar in the body. The drink may also help in touting the production of these hormones. Whiskey is sugar-free.

 2. Lowers risk of ischemic stroke

Ischemia is characterized by local disturbance in blood circulation due to mechanical obstruction of the blood supply(vasoconstriction)

This condition is caused by the formation of clots in your veins, arteries. When clots forms in them, they impede blood from reaching the brain which in turn cause ischemia. Whiskey helps in breaking those clogs in the body by ensuring that blood flows smooth

3. Fight and prevent cancer

The drink doesn't only prevent free radicals from forming but can also ravage tumour cells in the body. The allergic acid in whiskey has the capability to kill those cells causing abnormal growth.
